Why Fitted Cabinets Beat Freestanding Furniture
Fitted kitchen cabinets and wardrobes use every centimetre of available space. In Kenyan homes, where rooms are not always perfectly square and walls are not always perfectly straight, fitted furniture adapts to the space. Freestanding furniture does not.
The other advantage is customization. You choose the number of drawers, the shelf heights, the finish, the handles, and the internal layout. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)
The most common and most affordable material. MDF is smooth, easy to machine, and takes finishes well. The downside: standard MDF absorbs moisture. If it gets wet — and kitchens do get wet — it swells and does not recover. Use MDF only in dry areas or upgrade to moisture-resistant MDF.
Marine Board / Marine Plywood
The right choice for kitchen cabinets. Marine board is designed to resist moisture and humidity. It will not swell if it gets splashed. It costs more than standard MDF but the difference is paid back in years of trouble-free use. If your cabinet maker only offers standard MDF for a kitchen, ask why.
Plywood
A middle ground. Better moisture resistance than MDF, not as good as marine board. Suitable for wardrobes in dry areas and for cabinet frames.
Hardwood (Mahogany, Mvule)
The premium option. Solid hardwood is used for cabinet doors, frames, and visible components. It is the most durable and the most expensive. Hardwood doors can be re-polished decades later — engineered boards cannot.

- High gloss — reflective, modern, makes small kitchens feel larger. Shows fingerprints and scratches more easily. Popular in apartments and modern townhouses.

- Wooden finish — a wood-grain veneer or solid wood door. Warm, timeless, and works with both classic and modern interiors. Mahogany and mvule finishes are the most popular in Kenya.
The Measuring Process: Why We Come to Your House
Fitted cabinets are built to the exact dimensions of your space. That means someone has to come to your house with a tape measure and measure everything — wall lengths, ceiling height, window positions, door swings, pipe locations, and uneven corners.
This is not optional. A cabinet maker who builds from your floor plan alone will get it wrong, because floor plans do not show that your wall is 5mm out of square or that your floor slopes by 10mm across the kitchen. Those millimetres are the difference between cabinets that fit flush and cabinets with visible gaps.

Kitchen cabinets get wet. Sinks leak. Steam condenses. Spills happen. If your cabinet carcass is standard MDF, one leak under the sink can destroy the entire cabinet base.

Sliding doors are the standard choice for fitted wardrobes in 2026, and for good reason. Hinged doors need clearance space to open — typically 60cm of empty floor in front of the wardrobe. - Can I see a completed project? — a portfolio of real work is more valuable than any brochure
